Arcinova and University of Nottingham announce Innovate UK Grant.

[language] => * [fulltext] =>

Arcinova has announced the award of a £1.5 million Innovate UK grant for the development of new flexible modular manufacturing technologies; a project which is set to demonstrate the operating feasibility of world first innovative continuous production tools.

The project, which will span a three-year period, will be undertaken in collaboration with a team led by Professor Mike George, with Professors Pete Licence and Sir Martyn Poliakoff at the University of Nottingham.

The aim of the project is to develop a continuous, flexible modular manufacturing technology platform which will enable Arcinova to handle increasingly complex chemistries with more discreet manufacturing steps.

The platform will be used in manufacturing operations where manufacturing inventories need to be kept low and product purity needs to be maximized, where manufacturing throughput and efficiency are maintained at a high level and equipment changeover can be rapidly facilitated to cope with low batch numbers.

The project outcome is set to position Arcinova as a world leader in defining continuous modular manufacturing technology for the support of new chemical entities (NCEs) development, scale up and manufacture.

The developed continuous modular manufacturing technology will be easily scalable, with a reduced manufacturing footprint when compared to more traditional, batch reactor approaches. The developed technologies will enable Arcinova to enhance manufacturing capacity and minimise inventories for highly reactive hazardous processes whereas for a batch process the reaction scale would be severely constrained

Arcinova is a leading provider of drug substance process development and scale up support for a global client base and has inherited a site which has been operating for over 30 years with a wealth of process chemistry, safety, engineering and manufacturing support skills and infrastructure, both in batch and continuous manufacture.

The developed flexible modular manufacturing technology platform will enhance our existing infrastructure in GMP and non GMP assets, which include 5-litre and 20-litre GMP vessel streams, and build on its current capabilities in continuous processing technology.

Ian Shott CBE, CEO of Arcinova said: “I have spent over 20 years championing the way that pharmaceuticals are manufactured in the UK and have been an enthusiastic advocate for new manufacturing technologies including continuous manufacturing and synthetic biology as enablers for new and radically different pharmaceutical production approaches.

“This focus on improving productivity is laid out in the 2017 whitepaper on UK Industrial Strategy. I was delighted to learn of our successful Innovate UK grant which will enable Arcinova to offer a compelling, innovative and simplified route to high grade pharmaceutical manufacture.”

Mike George, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham, said: “My colleagues and I at Nottingham are firmly convinced that flow chemistry can transform chemical manufacture in the UK and this partnership with Arcinova is an opportunity to turn our vision into reality.”

Arcinova announces substantial growth in turnover and a major increase in staff numbers.

[language] => * [fulltext] =>

Arcinova was launched in February 2016, following the acquisition of the Covance site in Alnwick, by Arc Trinova Limited, a new company formed by Ian Shott and Paul Ryan, owners of Shott Trinova LLP. Our site was formerly owned by Sanofi, before being bought by Covance in 2010.

Arcinova’s year on year turnover grew by 60 per cent and our client numbers have increased from 50 to more than 120 in less than 24 months.

We have almost doubled our workforce in the last two years and have recently recruited new scientists into our Bioanalysis, API and CMC teams.

Our site has seen substantial additional investment since the launch of Arcinova as a company. We’ve invested heavily in new drug formulation and small volume API manufacturing equipment – including the introduction of two 20 litre capacity streams and one five litre stream - and we have extended our existing CMC and bioanalysis capabilities.

Ian Shott, CEO of Arcinova said: “It’s heartening to see that in just two years, we’ve built on the experience of the site’s existing team and our world-class facilities in Alnwick to grow our workforce, extend our capabilities and further strengthen our ability to serve the global pharmaceutical and biotechnology communities.

“Our specialist teams are making a real difference to drug development projects across the world and we are witnessing growing demand for our services.

“It has been an exciting journey so far and we’re looking forward to what the future holds for Arcinova.”

Due to growth, our Bioanalysis team continues to expand with two new recruits.

[language] => * [fulltext] =>

We’ve bolstered our bioanalysis team in response to increased demand for the specialist services we offer.

We’ve appointed Connor Walker and Paige Bellis as bioanalysts as part of our on-going recruitment drive.

Connor and Paige will be supporting the bioanalysis team on the delivery of a range of services including Chromatographic Services (LC-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Accurate Mass Spectrometry, In Vitro Assays and Bespoke Biochemical Assays and Metabolite Identification Studies.

The two new recruits are recent graduates of Northumbria University, where they studied Biomedical Sciences. Connor’s experience includes a placement at Institute of Genetic Medicine at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, where he worked as a trainee biomedical scientist. Paige spent time as a laboratory technician at analytical laboratory Derwentside Environmental Testing Services before joining us.  The pair join three new bioanalysts – Polly Wight, Liam Burns and Jenny Baker – who joined us in 2017 as part of the expansion of the bioanalysis team.

Commenting on her new role, Paige Bellis, who is from Hebburn, South Tyneside, said: “I’d always wanted to work in the pharmaceutical sector: Arcinova offered a brilliant opportunity to do this. It’s a really welcoming, friendly environment here and I’m looking forward to developing my skills and supporting the bioanalysis team on some really exciting projects.”

Connor Walker, who is originally from Northumberland added: “I’ve seen the growth of Arcinova over the last two years and it seemed like exactly the right place in which to progress my career. To have a company of this size and capabilities in the heart of Northumberland is fantastic.”

Stuart McDougall, Bioanalysis Leader at Arcinova, said: “The growth of our bioanalytical services is continuing at a rapid rate, in part due to large pharmaceutical companies outsourcing specialist services such as ICP-MS and GC-MS. By recruiting Connor and Paige, we’re both strengthening our current team and building for our future – and we’re delighted to be welcoming them on board at what is an exciting time for Arcinova.”

Ian Shott, Managing Director, commented: “We’re proud to be able to offer opportunities for talented graduates here in North East England – and to help them further their careers as scientists. I’m sure that Paige and Connor have a very bright future here at Arcinova, a place from which they can support the work of pharmaceutical and biotech firms across the globe – and make a real impact.”

New CMC recruit Luke Robinson, has been awarded the Agilent prize for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Analysis.

[language] => * [fulltext] =>

Luke Robinson, an analytical scientist in our CMC team, has won a major national award.

Luke, a Biopharmaceutical Science graduate from The University of Sunderland – who joined Arcinova this summer – has been awarded the Agilent prize for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Analysis.  This was in recognition of him achieving top mark in his final year Advanced Analytical Techniques module.

The prize was presented to Luke at our Alnwick site on November 22nd, 2017.

He also achieved a first class honours mark for his final year project in which he used LC-MS to investigate trace level unknown impurities in aspirin products. Away from his analytical work, Luke also won the Fujifilm Prize for achieving the highest mark in the Metabolomics and Proteomics module.

In addition, in the summer of 2016, Luke was awarded a bursary for an eight-week summer studentship, funded by the Chromatographic Society, through its joint summer studentship scheme with The British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) and the Royal Society of Chemistry separations group.

The Chromatographic Society is a UK registered charity founded in 1946, which aims to promote and disseminate knowledge on all aspects of chromatography and related separation techniques.

The studentships are focused on involving the student in scientific research resulting in a report, which may be shared via the society's publications and associated websites. Many studentships have led to academic publications and presentations.

Part of Luke’s work on optimised peak capacity in gradients using UHPLC (Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography) and HPLC (High-performance liquid chromatography). It was presented at The Chromatography Society meeting in Sandwich and a publication is in preparation, which is based on this work and other undergraduate work at the university.

Ian Shott, Managing Director of Arcinova said: “We are thrilled that Luke has been recognised for his incredible academic achievements and would like to congratulate him on his success.”

Martin Gray, Head of CMC at Arcinova, added: “Luke is an outstanding young scientist and we’re delighted that he is now part of the team here at Arcinova.”

Polly Wight, Liam Burns and Jenny Baker have joined Arcinova as bioanalysts and will be responsible for supporting the Bioanalysis team across a range of services, including sample preparation, analysis, auditing and reporting.

Polly Wight, from Berwick, has joined the team following graduation from Newcastle University, where she studied Pharmacology, while Liam Burns, from Ashington, holds an MSc in Applied Chemistry from Northumbria University. Jenny Baker, from Whitley Bay, meanwhile, is a graduate of the University of Hull, where she studied Marine and Freshwater Biology.

Speaking about his new role, Liam Burns said: “This represents a fantastic opportunity for me to progress my career. Arcinova has the capabilities and facilities of a large company but combines this with a really friendly, personal approach, which is very refreshing.”

Polly Wight commented: “Throughout my university career, I was interested in working in drug development and the pharmaceutical industry. It’s therefore fantastic to have a company like Arcinova here in North East England, which is helping graduates to launch their careers.”

Jenny Baker added: “My degree work leant heavily towards genetics and laboratory work so this role at Arcinova seemed liked a perfect chance to expand on my existing skills and develop further expertise. I’m delighted that I was offered the role and look forward to working with the team on a wide range of projects.”

Stuart McDougall, Bioanalysis Leader at Arcinova, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Polly, Liam and Jenny to the Arcinova team.

“We have seen significant additional demand for our services over the last year, partly as a consequence of the increasing trend among pharma companies to outsource their bioanalytical services and by strengthening our Bioanalysis team we are able to both meet existing client demands and build a solid foundation for future growth in this area.”

Ian Shott, Managing Director of Arcinova, added: “Arcinova already benefits from having a strong core of world-class scientists with extensive industry knowledge, but we are also committed to attracting and nurturing new scientific talent – as well as a helping to retain exceptional graduates within the North East.

“We look forward to seeing Polly, Liam and Jenny grow with us as Arcinova continues its development – it’s fantastic to have them on board.”

Arcinova have installed 20L GMP vessel streams into the API manufacturing laboratory.

[language] => * [fulltext] =>

Arcinova has made a major investment in its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) capabilities.

We are pleased to announce that we have introduced two new 20-litre GMP vessel streams to our API manufacturing facility.

The introduction of the two new streams means that Arcinova can now offer fully integrated drug substance and drug product capabilities on one site.

With the addition of two 20- litre capacity GMP streams and one five litre GMP stream, which was installed earlier in 2017, the new systems afford Arcinova over 140 L of cumulative reactor volume at their Alnwick site. This will now enable Arcinova to produce between 0.5g to 4kg of API or an intermediate per batch with an annual total capacity of min. 500kg.

The vessel streams are in a fully GMP-compliant facility incorporating CFR21 and GAMP 5 compliant data logging and can operate between 180 °C and minus 80 °C. They use active data logging of vessel temperature and stirring rates in a fully CFR21-compliant system.

The streams operate in conjunction with a contained Nutche filter for API isolation, and a 0.15128 litre sqm vacuum oven for the drying of intermediates. Arcinova also offers a dedicated raw material and final product storage and sampling facility.

Arcinova have further invested in Flowsyn flow equipment to enhance the capability of these assets and will continue to invest in flexible modular manufacture technology to increase our drug substance manufacturing capacity.

Paul Quigley, Head Of API Development and Bioanalytical Services, said: “The introduction of the 20 -litre streams forms part of our business growth strategy and will enable us to further enhance the service Arcinova is able to offer our global customer base.”

“Our ability to offer fully integrated drug substance and drug product capabilities on one site, is a major advantage for our customers and allows us to react more quickly and nimbly to client requirements, and provide security of supply.”

Ian Shott, Managing Director of Arcinova, added: “The installation of the new 20 -litre streams at our Alnwick site is part of a program of continued investment in our capabilities.”

“Since the company was launched in 2016, we have built on the world class facilities of the site, and the legacy of its former owners, Covance and the growth of our API department is a key part of this.”
